Many of us choose to live in the Qualicum area to enjoy the year-round recreational opportunities. While often this means utilizing the walking trails, bicycle paths, or a paddle in the sea, it also includes the leisure activities we enjoy at home, such as socializing or reading on our sundeck.
Decks or patios can be constructed of various materials, depending on several factors such as the height above ground and what is underneath. Decking options include concrete, wood, composite decking, or vinyl. If your deck is above living space or otherwise needs to be kept dry underneath, then your best option is vinyl decking. Technically known as pedestrian roofing, vinyl decking is a certified roofing material, designed to be walked on. There are many brands available, but Duradek is the most commonly known one. Vinyl decking will shed water as a roof does, therefore it is important that the deck is sloped correctly. As professional installers, incorrect sloping is one of the most common mistakes we see people make in construction.
The main benefits of vinyl decking are:
· Waterproofing: To ensure the area below is kept dry, it is critical to have any seams heat welded to create a molecular bond between the different sheets.
· Low maintenance: Vinyl decking requires no special maintenance and can be cleaned with a soft bristled brush or a power washer.
· Longevity: Most brands come with a 15 year manufacturer’s warranty, but you could expect it to last 25 years, or as long as a roof.
While vinyl decking materials can be purchased at flooring or building stores, installation and proper waterproofing can be difficult. It is therefore critical to hire a certified and experienced vinyl decking installer.
Other than the surface material, the other key components of your deck are the railings. Any deck more than 24 inches above the ground is required to have a safety railing. As it is low maintenance that we strive for, consider a powder coated aluminum railing. Choose fascia mount over top mount railings to avoid putting screw holes in your new deck. Like the vinyl decking, aluminum railings are easy to clean and maintain the new look over the long term.
